Just ponder that ridiculously large number for a moment and you can appreciate why this engine entertains so much attention. To this end, Chevrolet announced that sometime during 2011, the 100 millionth small-block trundled down the assembly line. Chevrolet considers the LS to be simply an extension – a new branch of the original small-block V8 tree. Its bore centers, the distance between the centerline of each cylinder, has not changed since 1955. The LS remains a pushrod, 2-valve V8 in a land of DOHC engines. Yet we can trace the GM V8 LS family – Gen III and IV – with a nearly straight line right back to the origins of the 265 small-block Chevy that made its debut in 1955.
